Mary Jane Doubleday, Hope Maine
Mary Jane Doubleday specializes in elegant, sculptural designs inspired by nature. Each piece of her jewelry is constructed individually by hand. Shapes are sawed from precious metals, textured, formed with a hammer and then soldered together to create a graceful finished piece.
Mary Jane has a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art where she studied metal smithing. She has taught, been a visiting artist, and mentored students in Maine Schools. Mary Jane is a member of the Maine Crafts Guild.
"Influenced by a childhood interest in origami, my earliest jewelry was designed by bending and folding paper, and then metal shapes into three dimensional forms. Now, more than 30 years later, I am still bending precious metals into jewelry.
My recent work involves translating forms observed in nature into wearable design. I work with that essential line or shape that captures a subject in the simplest, most elegant way. My goal is to develop graceful, well crafted designs that will bring many years of enjoyment to the wearer."
